4 Tips for Building an Authentic Social Presence

Are you looking to build a social media presence for your business but don’t know where to start? Or maybe you’ve started, but it doesn’t feel authentic?

When it comes to social media, being authentic should be your number one priority. People can spot inauthenticity from a mile away, and if you’re not being genuine, they’ll quickly lose interest. Here are four tips to help you build an authentic social media presence:

Be true to yourself

This one seems obvious, but it’s worth repeating. Be true to who you are as a person and as a business. Don’t try to be something you’re not – people will see right through it.

For example, I don’t recommend hopping on every social trend. And when you do join in on a trend, make sure it aligns with your brand and that you’re doing it for the right reasons (not just because everyone else is).

Be transparent

Don’t try to hide anything – be open and honest with your audience. If you make a mistake, own up to it and apologize. People appreciate honesty and will respect you for it.

Many brands have posted apologies when they’ve made mistakes and many have not. The ones that have been transparent and honest with their audience have generally come out ahead.

Engage with your audience

Respond to comments, questions, and concerns. Show that you’re listening and that you care about what your audience has to say. The more you engage, the stronger your relationship will be with your followers.

Engagement can be time consuming, but it’s worth it. If you don’t have the time to spend on engagement, we offer social media management services that can take care of it for you.

I also recommend trying Dollar Eighty, an engagement tool.

Insert your brand values into your content

Your content should reflect your brand’s values in some way. This will help people understand what you stand for and why they should care about your brand.

When you infuse your content with your values, it not only helps people to better understand your brand, but it also makes your content more authentic. And as we’ve established, authenticity is key.

If you are unsure of your brand values, I wrote a great blog post about those here.

At KMC, authenticity is one of our core brand values and we don’t hold back our personalities on our social media. By doing so, we have gained many clients that appreciate our realness. It often makes our clients feel comfortable, which in turn helps them and us to create more creative content. This can look like creating reels that are uncensored or posting a story about having a bad business day and how to overcome it.

It is important to note that when you’re being authentic on social, you actually tend to attract like minded clients and customers. Clients approach us constantly asking if they should post reels or TikToks with uncensored sounds.

Our answer is actually more of a question. Does your target audience use curse words? Do they get offended by them? If you can answer that question with certainty, you likely have your answer.

Building an authentic social media presence takes time and effort, but it’s worth it. By being true to yourself and engaging with your audience, you’ll create lasting relationships that will benefit both you and your business in the long run.

If authenticity is something you are still working on for your brand, we offer social media audits that can help you to better understand where you stand and how to improve. We also have a team of expert social media managers that can help you to create and post content that is aligned with your brand values.
